Before you write in: most issues below can be fixed in under a minute. Scan the categories first — if you're still stuck, email us with your account email, the bill name (if relevant), and a screenshot, and we'll get back to you within one business day.

Receipt scanning issues

The scan missed items or got prices wrong
Tap any item after scanning to edit its name, price, or quantity — nothing is locked in until you assign items to people. For consistently poor results, make sure the receipt is flat, well-lit, and fully in frame, and try the "Import Receipt" option to select a sharper photo from your library instead of the live camera.
Scanning is stuck on "Reading receipt…"
This step needs an internet connection. Check your Wi-Fi or cellular data, then try again. If it's still stuck after 30 seconds, close and reopen the scanner — your photo isn't lost, you can re-select it from your library.
CheckMate says it can't detect any items
This usually means the photo is too blurry, dark, or at too sharp an angle for the text to be read. Retake the photo straight-on with good lighting, or add the items manually using "Create Manually" — it takes about as long as fixing a bad scan.

Payment issues

I paid, but CheckMate still shows me as "Pending"
CheckMate can't detect payments automatically because it never touches your money — Venmo, Zelle, and Apple Pay are separate apps. After paying, tap "Mark as Paid" on your share so everyone (and your balance) reflects it.
The Venmo / Zelle / Apple Pay link isn't opening the right app
Make sure the relevant app is installed and you're signed in. CheckMate deep-links into these apps with the amount and recipient pre-filled — if the app isn't installed, your phone won't know where to send the link. You can always pay manually and mark your share as paid.
Can I get a refund through CheckMate?
No — since CheckMate never processes payments, refunds have to go through whichever app you actually paid with (Venmo, Zelle, or Apple Pay). Reach out to that app's support for payment disputes.
Someone marked themselves as paid but I never received anything
Unmark it by tapping their status and confirming with them directly — CheckMate reflects what people report, since it doesn't have visibility into the actual money movement. If this keeps happening with the same person, that's unfortunately a them problem, not a CheckMate one.

Guest user questions

Do I need to make an account to join a bill?
No — but you do need CheckMate installed on your phone to open the invite link. Once you tap it, you can see items, your share, and pay without creating an account. You'll only be asked to sign in if you tap "Accept Bill" to permanently join it.
I joined as a guest — can I come back to the bill later?
Guest sessions are tied to the device you joined from. If you want reliable access later (or across devices), create a free account by tapping "Accept Bill" — it takes one tap with Apple, Google, or email.
Can I un-claim an item I accidentally selected?
Yes — tap the item again to release it back to the shared pool. Changes sync to everyone else on the bill in real time.

Account questions

How do I change my name, photo, or Venmo handle?
Go to Account in the app's tab bar — you can update your name, avatar, Venmo username, home currency, and notification preferences there at any time.
Can I sign in with Apple, Google, and email at once?
Each CheckMate account is tied to one sign-in method at a time, matched by email address. If you signed up with email and later want to use Apple or Google sign-in with the same email, contact support and we can help link them.
How do I delete my account?
Email support@checkmatesplit.app from your account's email address requesting deletion. We'll confirm and permanently remove your account and personal data, minus anything we're required to retain for legal or fraud-prevention purposes — see our Privacy Policy for details.

Bug reports & feature requests

What should I include in a bug report?
The more detail, the faster we can fix it: what you were doing, what you expected to happen, what happened instead, your device model and iOS version, and a screenshot or screen recording if you can grab one. Send it to support@checkmatesplit.app.
How do I request a new feature?
Email us at support@checkmatesplit.app with the subject "Feature Request" — we read every one and use them to shape the roadmap, even if we can't reply to each individually.
The app crashed — what do I do?
Reopen the app first; your bill data is saved and syncs from our servers, so a crash won't lose your splits. Then let us know what you were doing right before it crashed so we can reproduce and fix it.
